Care Experienced History Month 2022

Australian Steering Committee, Care Experienced History Month 2022

It’s Care Experienced History Month again this April.

The inaugural Care Experienced History in April 2021 was a considerable success with the launch of an international website, individual life stories being featured on our facebook page, a symposium on the 15th April with presenters across Australia, and culminating with the International Day of Remembrance.

This year we have a range of events for attending in person and online, including one that was held on on 4th April, the Enabling Better Aged and Community Care For Forgotten Australians Forum, My Horizon, Capalaba, Qld.

The forum was a hybrid event with an online webinar and showcased what the future could hold in aged and community care for Forgotten Australians. It spotlighted the need to co-design new models of care, what the evidence is telling us, the need for change approaches and service models, international experiences, and the need for skilled and capable workforces across all types of care.

TODAY 11th April – 7pm AEST Breaking the Cycle of Inter-Generational Out of Home Care.

According to a Federal Government Senate Report on Out of Home Care (2015), there is little known about whether children and young people in OOHC have parents with an OOHC experience. However, people did come forward to the Senate Inquiry to speak about that as a factor in their own experience, including one woman who was “the third generation of children placed in care” (Section 3.33).

For this online event, Jim Luthy, OA and former Gill Memorial Boys Home resident, will facilitate an important conversation with Care Leavers about how they broke the cycle of children being separated from their families.
